About Kalki:
Kalki Subramaniam is the most recognized Indian transgender activist. She is also
an artist, poet, actor, Ted Speaker, and inclusion catalyst. She is the founder of the
Sahodari Foundation, an organization that works for the social, political, and
economic empowerment of transgender people.
With Evergreen Story, she co-founded ‘The Indian Transgender Oral History Project,’
documenting oral histories of hundreds of Indian transgender persons’ accounts of
their lives in their voices. She is a seasoned corporate speaker on diversity, equity,
and inclusion at multi-national corporates like Google, Facebook, Adobe, Walmart,
etc., and has lobbied to create Inclusive workplace policies to create non-
discriminating environments for LGBTQIA+ employees in India.
Kalki was born in 1972 as the second child among three children. She has two
sisters and was the only born male child. The family has been living in the beautiful
rural town of Pollachi in the southern state of Tamilnadu. Kalki’s early education was
in the municipalities of Kodaikanal and Pollachi, where she studied Tamil, English,
and Hindi languages.
Kalki’s feature film ‘Narthaki’ was the first Indian movie to narrate the life of an
abandoned transgender woman and her struggles for dignity in a discriminating
society. In 2014, she published her collection of Tamil poetry as a book called ‘Kuri
Aruthean.’ In 2021, she published her first English book called ‘We Are Not the
Others,’ a collection of her poems and monologues.
Kalki has two master’s degrees in Journalism and International Relations. Facebook
and LinkedIn have recognized her as among the top 15 social influencers.
